Pianist, Composer, Music Theorist, Educator



A jazz-fusion quartet led by pianist and composer James McGowan, with Alex Moxon on guitar, JP Lapensee on bass, and Jamie Holmes on drums; collaborations with Mike Tremblay, Wayne Eagles, and Michael Hanna.



A jazz-folk-blues quintet created by James McGowan and saxophonist Rev. Peter Woods to bridge the gap between secular and sacred, with vocalist Leah Cogan; collaborations with Jamaal Jackson-Rogers and others.


Composition and Arranging

Award-winning composer of chamber music, electronic forms, art songs, music theatre, jazz-fusion, as well as choral compositions and arrangements.


Trinity & Community Music

Trinity United is an Ottawa congregation with a music program led by James McGowan as choir director, pianist, and organist, featuring monthly jazz services, a winter cantata, and a philosophy of affirming everyone who wishes to be part of the community.


Jazz Theory Research

Dr. McGowan is the editor of the Jazz Theory Bibliography, a searchable online resource for research in jazz theory, which is hosted at Carleton University, in the School for Studies in Art & Culture.
